I am a theoretical
high energy (or particle) physicist, specializing in string
theory, and more specifically, in the holographic (or gauge/gravity, or AdS/CFT) correspondence. Holography makes the remarkable claim that certain universes where gravity does not exist and space has few dimensions are completely equivalent to universes where gravity does exist and space has more dimensions. This insight has dramatically altered our understanding of modern theoretical physics, providing very useful tools to study situations where particles experience intense forces (i.e., strongly-coupled quantum field theories), and offering a fresh and very enlightening perspective on the difficult problem of obtaining a microscopic description of gravity (i.e., a theory of quantum gravity).
